Job Description

Bittersweet Encounters is seeking qualified, bilingual Family Supervised Visitation Monitors to provide court-ordered supervised visitation services on an independent contractor (1099), on-call basis.

This role is referral-based, and hours are not guaranteed . Assignments are offered based on court referrals, program needs, and contractor availability. As such, this position is best suited as a secondary or supplemental role, not a primary source of income.

Independent Contractor Status.

This position is classified as an independent contractor (1099) role and is not an employee position. Independent Contractors:

  • Control their availability and may accept or decline referrals.
  • Are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and related obligations.
  • Are not eligible for employee benefits.
  • Provide services in accordance with court orders, agency policies, and applicable California law.

California law requires supervised visitation providers to meet specific training, eligibility, and background standards.

Required Training (California Compliance).

Prior to providing services, contractors must complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of supervised visitation training, consistent with California Rules of Court, Rule 5.20.

Tr aining must include at least twelve (12) hours of classroom instruction in the following areas:

  • Role and responsibilities of a professional supervised visitation provider.
  • Child abuse and mandated reporting laws.
  • Record-keeping and documentation requirements.
  • Screening, monitoring, and termination of visitation (minimum 3 hours).
  • Developmental needs of children (minimum 3 hours).
  • Legal responsibilities and obligations of providers.
  • Cultural sensitivity and neutrality.
  • Conflicts of interest, including acceptance of gifts.
  • Confidentiality requirements.
  • Substance abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse, and domestic violence (minimum 3 hours).
  • Basic knowledge of family and juvenile law (minimum 1 hour).

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must meet all of the following California-mandated criteria:

  • No conviction for driving under the influence (DUI) within the last five (5) years.
  • No probation or parole within the last ten (10) years.
  • No convictions for child abuse, child molestation, or crimes against a person.
  • No civil, criminal, or juvenile restraining orders within the last ten (10) years.
  • No current or prior court orders in which the provider was the supervised party.
  • Agreement to strictly follow and enforce all applicable court orders.
  • Ability to successfully pass:
    • DOJ and FBI criminal background clearance.
    • Pre-engagement drug screening.
    • Physical examination and TB test.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing.
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to meet auto insurance requirements.

Position Summary:

The Family Supervised Visitation Monitor provides neutral, objective supervision of court-ordered visits to ensure child safety, compliance with court orders, and accurate documentation in accordance with California law and agency standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise court-ordered visits between non-custodial parent(s) and child(ren).
  • Observe interactions and intervene when necessary to ensure child safety.
  • Maintain neutrality and professional boundaries at all times.
  • Accurately document visit observations the in required visitation reports.
  • Immediately report safety concerns, concerns, or violations to the Program Coordinator.
  • Terminate visits when required to protect the child or comply with court orders.
  • Adhere to assigned schedules and clearly communicate availability.
  • Track and submit time, mileage, and documentation by required deadlines.
  • Notify the Coordinator in advance when unavailable for scheduled visits.
  • Follow visitation site procedures and agency confidentiality standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children and families in a social services, behavioral health, or related setting.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English strongly preferred).

Work Location:

Services are provided primarily at Bittersweet Encounters’ supervised visitation facility.

Depending on court orders and referral needs, some visits may occur in the community within a 25-mile radius of the facility (e.g., parks or other court-approved locations).

Independent Contractors must have reliable transportation and the ability to travel locally as needed.

Compensation:

$30.00 – $35.00 per hour, based on qualifications and relevant foster care, adoption, or supervised visitation experience.

Schedule:

  • On-call / referral-based.
  • Flexible availability required.
  • Assignments may include evenings and weekends.
