ASSISTANT STATE ARCHEOLOGIST (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) – DESERT DIVISION / COLORADO DESERT DISTRICT / BORREGO SPRINGS
The reporting location for this position is Begole Archaeological Research Center in Borrego Springs, CA. This position will work under the supervision of Senior State Archaeologist.
The Assistant State Archaeologist will perform the less difficult and complex work in the development and implementation of cultural resources management projects, planning, and stewardship at the Colorado Desert District, including Anza Borrego Desert State Park, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and Palomar Mountain State Park. This position will assist in the coordination of contractors, tribal partners and volunteers for a 20,000+ acre survey in the Coyote Canyon Cultural Preserve. The Assistant State Archaeologist will compile data, manage records, write reports, manage contracts, review reports and records from contractors and make recommendations for cultural resources. The incumbent may also support other district programs or cultural resources management efforts.
Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

This is a field-oriented position with approximately 50% of time spent in the field. The field will include hiking across rugged terrain, hot and freezing conditions (30-105 degrees), experiencing biting insects, and some overnight camping. The ability to drive challenging unpaved roads with the use of state-owned 4-wheel drive vehicle is required. The ability to lift 50 lbs. and walk up to 9 miles daily is required. 50% of time will be spent indoors attending meetings, processing emails, phone calls, writing reports, and other office duties. This may include working at a computer for 8-10 hours. Overnight travel is required.
