Job Description and Duties

The Support Services Assistant (Interpreter) (SSAI) will facilitate communications accurately, effectively and impartially using sign language for hearing impaired and severely speech impaired incarcerated persons. The SSAI will also perform other duties related to assisting in the communication process. The SSAI is under the direct supervision of the Institution’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator and Indirect supervision of the Warden. This position may require the SSAI to travel to other correctional institutions, other than their assigned facility, if needed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Overtime hours may be necessary when required for emergency circumstances.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Will also consider Temporary Appointments (TA) - Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the classification, but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination, may apply as a TA.  TAs are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TA to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TA. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TA will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.

Working Conditions

California Medical Facility (CMF), located in a unique spot in Vacaville, CA. Unique as in being surrounded by many areas for family fun, exercise, touristy adventures and more. Approximately 35 miles east of downtown Sacramento, approximately 53 miles west of Pier 39 in San Francisco, and if you want to meet in the middle you can swing by Napa which is approximately 30 miles west. Also located nearby are the Vacaville Outlets for all your shopping needs.

Candidates new to CDCR are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

Knowledge of: Methods of and proficiency in facilitating communication between hearing impaired and hearing persons by sign language and spoken language.

Ability to: Relate well to individuals, representatives or other State agencies and communities; read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
Neatness, willingness to follow directions; sensitivity to the communication process between hearing impaired and hearing persons and the needs of the per sons involved in that process; and ability to maintain confidentiality. Some positions may require driving. For those positions, possession of a valid California driver license will be required. Applicants who do not possess this license will be admitted to the examination but must secure the license prior to appointment.
