The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), North Central Region (R2) is seeking motivated candidates with a positive disposition for an Environmental Scientist to support our Conserved Lands Team in helping us provide Habitat Resiliency and Restoration responses to impacts such as wildfires. This position is part of a large team that manages over 100,000 acres of habitat in the North Central Region.

This position is responsible for planning and implementing habitat resiliency and restoration projects. This includes project management, mapping, pre-treatment biological surveys, tracking progress towards program objectives, planning and developing contracts, and adaptive management. The incumbent will collaborate within the Conserved Lands Team, other internal programs in R2 and Headquarters, Cal Fire, and various external agencies and stakeholders throughout the region and state to maximize the benefits of these projects.

Under the close supervision of the program’s Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the incumbent will be a member of the Region 2 Conserved Lands Programs and assist with implementation of Habitat Resiliency and Restoration Team projects and activities. Duties will consider climate change adaptation needs while focusing on habitat resiliency and effective restoration strategies related to wildland fires while providing internal and external coordination. The Environmental Scientist will implement appropriate climate adaptation measures using nature-based restoration solutions. The incumbent will coordinate field work activities while conducting ecological surveys, analyzing data, and producing monitoring reports and work summaries. Activities will meet environmental compliance needs and respond to public inquiries about the program.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer keyboard for several hours each day including familiarity with Microsoft Office software. Responsibilities are split between office and field work. Office work will entail researching reviewing and developing documents in addition to working with Regional staff, interact with headquarters staff and members of the public via e-mail, telephone and through virtual meetings. Complete office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking. Possession of valid California Driver’s License. Ability to drive for up to 8 hours including occasional overnight travel to reach some project locations may be required. Ability to work outdoors for up to week-long trips in variable weather conditions, operate 4WD vehicles, with and without trailers, and may include boats, wading in streams, and walking over uneven outdoor terrain carrying a 30 lb. backpack for up to 6 hours. Use an All-Terrain Vehicle; travel over uneven and steep terrain, long distances by foot in inclement weather (wet, cold, hot, and dry). Must be willing to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff on certain occasions.

Special Requirements

This position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

We are seeking candidates with a positive attitude and willingness to collaborate as part of a team (both internal and with external partners). Experience with mapping, data collection/management and data analysis software and programs. An ideal candidate would have a background in fire, forest and wildlife ecology, an understanding of fuels management and habitat restoration, experience working with or around mechanical equipment including chainsaws, chippers, and heavy equipment. Knowledge of rangeland ecology would also be beneficial.

Special Personal Characteristics: Strong written and verbal communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and flexibility. Extensive experience performing spatial analysis and deep understanding of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) products such as ArcMap, Arc GISPro, ArcGIS Survey123, StoryMaps, and FieldMaps.
